Diabetes is a medical condition that occurs when blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is higher than normal. Blood sugar is the main source of energy for the body that comes from the food we eat. Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas, helps glucose generated from food to get into the body’s cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body does not produce enough insulin or may not utilize the insulin properly. Then, glucose ends up in the blood and does not reach the cells making the blood sugar level rise.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood will lead to health issues. Although diabetes does not have a cure, we can take measures to manage diabetes and stay healthy.

There are different types of diabetes and not every diabetic is the same, so let us get to what it is!

Type 1 Diabetes:

In this condition, the pancreas of the body does not secrete insulin. Here, the immune system attacks the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. This is mostly observed in children and adults and they have to take insulin shots to treat the condition.

Type 2 Diabetes: here, the body does not produce or efficiently utilize insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a commonly observed type amongst others and can be seen in middle to old-aged people.

Gestational Diabetes: This type is of diabetes is seen in pregnant women and it is seen to go away after delivering the baby but there is a higher risk for these women to develop diabetes in the future.

There’s another area known as borderline sugar where the blood sugar level has crossed the normal slightly.
