Protein Shakes: How Many Is Too Many?

How many protein shakes can I drink in a day?

Protein shakes assist with gaining muscle and boosting your endurance. Although a person can drink from one to three protein shakes a day, depending on their fitness goals, it is really unnecessary.

Protein shakes are trusted and relied upon by many athletes, body builders, and gym enthusiasts as they help with the growth, recovery, and maintenance of muscle.

Being a rather convenient and tasty method to fuel your body with protein, you must, at some point wonder if there is a limit to how much protein a body can take in a day.

Although there is no restriction on how many shakes can be consumed by a person within a day, ideally, a person can consume anywhere from one to three shakes in a day, depending on their fitness goals.

But you need to tread with caution as a little too much of something can end up hurting your body.

That brings us to how much protein is safe to consume.

The amount of protein that is safe for consumption differs from person to person. Everyone is different and similarly, has different fitness goals. The health, metabolism, and genetics also play a role.

An average adult’s protein intake is 0.8g of protein per kg of their bodyweight as claimed by the US Food and Nutrition Board. But, this number can alter as how much protein one can consume depends on their fitness goals.

In other words, there is no ideal measurement that is applicable for all people. You cannot mimic your favourite athlete and consume the same amount of protein as they do. Your protein intake needs to be custom-made for only you with the help of a nutritionist or a dietician.

As it was mentioned earlier, ideally, a person can consume anywhere from one to three shakes in a day, depending on their fitness goals. But this does not mean that you absolutely have to. Drinking them every day will only up your calorie count without any additional benefits.

Problems caused due to heavy consumption of protein

In the short-run, you may experience minor side effects such as cramps, gas, or bloating.

But what about the long-run? There have been researches conducted that show that people who consume too much protein than required, suffer from high-level side effects such as coronary heart disease, increased risk of cancer, and disorders of liver function and bone. Other side effects that you may experience are fatigue, weakness, unable to lose weight, hair-fall, and irritability, to name some.

Your body is accustomed to process solid food and shakes are not it. They are liquid. Constantly drinking shakes will alter the consistency of your stool, leading you to suffer from diarrhoea.

If you are suffering from any kidney problems, it is recommended that you do not consume unnecessary amount if protein shakes as it can increase the symptoms.

But, not drinking an unnecessary amount of protein shakes a day does not mean that you can add too many scoops of protein powder to a single shake. It is the same thing as drinking too many shakes a day.

Moreover, if you are not careful about the ingredients you add in your shakes, they will only bring you an increase in your sugar levels and calorie count.

If you are drinking pre-made shakes daily by purchasing them, you are at even more risk. Not all ready-made shakes available out there are true to their promises. Most of them just promise you the too-good-to-be-true stuff only to leave their ends unfulfilled. Hence, it is necessary that you read the labels on the products that give nutritional information.
